Martha Chestnutwood

Martha Harriet Foley, only child of Donald and Lydia Foley, was born near De Soto, Dallas county, Iowa, November 24, 1882. She has been in failing health for some time but medical skill and the constant family care were of no avail and on December 28, 1933, she fell asleep. Her husband and children were by her bedside. She was 71 years, 1 month and 4 days old at the time of her death.

When a baby only two weeks old her father died of measles in the South during the Civil war. She with her mother remained in her grandfather Woley’s home for several years. Her mother then married Joseph Perkins who took a great interest in her. She received her education in the public schools of De Soto.

When a young girl she was converted and united with the M. E. church, where she has ever held her membership.

She was married October 17, 1880 to Jake Chestnutwood. To this union three children were born. Two daughters, Mrs. Mae Daulton of Dexter and Mrs. Lucille Rhodes of De Soto. One son, Frank, who is at home. She and her husband celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary last October.

Besides her children she leaves her husband, 7 grandchildren, one half-sister, Mrs. Carrie Benedict of Grangeville, Idaho. Her mother preceded her in death in August of 1930.

The funeral was held on New Year’s day 1934 at the M. E. church at De Soto. The services were conducted by Rev. S. C. Peterson. The casket bearers were her grandsons: Loren Rhodes, Dale Rhodes, Wilbur Rhodes, Clifton Daulton, Lawrence Daulton and Roy Daulton. Music was furnished by Mr. and Mrs. M. W. Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. L. O. Benfield with Terry Anderson at the piano. Interment was made in the Ellis cemetery.
