Death of Mrs. Murray

Word has been received here of the death of Mrs. Caroline Murray, a former resident of Winterset, on Thursday, September 11th. Mrs. Murray was injured in an automobile accident in Los Angeles, on September first, when another car ran into the Packard machine driven by her granddaughter, Maud Parker. Mrs. Murray had several ribs broken and one punctured her lung, so her condition was critical from the first. She was 84 years of age.

Funeral services were held in Los Angeles, Saturday, September 18th, and burial was made there. She leaves three daughters, Mrs. Lenore Weirick, with whom she made her home, of Hollywood; Mrs. Maud Ward and Mrs. Bess Shepherd of Los Angeles. Her husband and a son, Nick Murray, have preceded her in death.

MRS. MURRAY KILLED IN AUTO ACCIDENT

Pioneer Winterset Woman Dies in Hollywood. Was 84 Years Old.

Mrs. Maria Gilpin received word Tuesday that Mrs. Caroline Murray, pioneer woman of Winterset, prominent in Winterset social circles and for years a primary teacher in Winterset schools was fatally injured in an auto crash in Hollywood, California, on September 8. She died on September 11. The Los Angeles press says:

Funeral services for Mrs. Caroline Murray, who died from shock incident to a traffic accident, will be conducted at 2 o’clock tomorrow afternoon at the Strothers parlors, 6240 Hollywood boulevard, burial following at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

Mrs. Murray was believed only injured Labor day when the machine in which she was riding with her granddaughter, Mrs. Parker Foster, collided with another car. She sank into a coma a few days later, however, and succumbed yesterday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. B. Weirick, 6831 Odin street.

She came here from Iowa many years ago and have lived here ever since, being a prominent in club activities, particularly those of the Women’s City club. She was active in the Temple Baptist church. Her husband was state senator in Iowa and was active in politics for years before his death.

Besides her daughter and granddaughter, she is survived by two other daughters, Mrs. Maude M. Ward and Mrs. E. M. Shepherd, both of Los Angeles; a brother, William Holliday of Greenfield, Iowa, and a sister, Mrs. A. R. Dabney of Oakland.

Mrs. Murray was a daughter of the Holliday family prominent in Winterset before and after the Civil War. Her husband, Frank Murray, was a soldier, a Winterset lawyer and was elected representative of Madison county in 1867. After his death Mrs. Murray was County recorder for two terms and was primary teacher in the South Ward school until she left for California. She was 84 years old.
