A SAD DEATH

The little four year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Smith, who live four miles north of Kasson, died on Tuesday of last week and was buried on the day following.

The cause of her death is somewhat of a mystery though it is thought she received internal injuries inflicted either by an old sow or a weaning colt. The little child was seen playing in the pen with the stock and coming to the house of her own accord she took sick, continued to grow worse and died on the following day. Only one bruise was found on her body and that was not sufficient to cause her death.

HOG KILLS LITTLE GIRL

A Vicious Hog Attacks Little Girl and Kills Her

TRYING TO CATCH THE LITTLE PIGS

Little Child of Oscar Smith Tries to Catch Pig for Pet and is attacked and Trampled on by Old Sow. Screams are Heard by Mother.

The four year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Smith, living four miles east of Macksburg was attacked Monday by a hog and received injuries so severe that she died the following day.

While Mrs. Smith was rocking the baby to sleep her little four year old daughter who was playing in the yard slipped out to the hog pen in which was an old sow with a litter of pigs. The child admired the little pigs greatly and wanting one of them for a pet got into the pen and caught one.

Te squeals of the pig at once brought the old sow to the rescue and attacking the child she knocked her down, trampled on her and rooted her into the mud.

How long hog had the child down is not known but she finally escaped and was found by her mother who ran in search of her when she heard the screams and carried her into the house. The hog had not bitten the child but had rooted and trampled its body frightfully, especially over its stomach, and it was a mass of bruises.
Medical assistance was summoned at once by telephone and everything done that was possible to revive it, but the injuries were so severe that she died the following day.
