ILL HEALTH CAUSED PENDER SUICIDE

Shoots Himself In Head With Revolver. Burial On Friday.

Harvey Pender, lifelong resident of the county, ended his life by shooting himself in the head at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Millie Davis of Winterset. He had been in ill health for two or three years and had failed mentally very much the last two months.

The funeral was held Friday, the Rev. B. L. Nay of Boone, an old friend of the family, officiating. The burial was in the Primitive Baptist cemetery north of the city.

Harvey Pender’s father was one of the first settlers at Compton’s mill, “Buffalo,” and Harvey was born in the old homestead, the house that stood near the city wells at the old “Pender Hole” in Middle River. He was married to Mattie Crawley in 1880. She died in 1888. Three children, Will and Sherman of Winterset, and his daughter survive.

Harvey Pender was a quiet, unassuming man with a fine sense of honor. He loved the outdoors and was a keen observer of its wildlife. He spent most of his life on a farm.
