HOWARD MAPES KILLED BY TRAIN SUNDAY NIGHT

Howard I. Mapes, 66, was killed Sunday night about 9:00 p.m. when the west bound Rocket struck his Chevrolet pick-up truck broadside at the crossing about four miles east of Earlham. He appeared to be headed south as the train was traveling west. The impact was on the drivers side. The pick-up was badly mashed, with the motor being broken loose from the frame and the frame bent in a semi-circle. His body remained in the cab of the truck.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, July 3 at 2:30 p.m. at Mt. Vernon church. Rev. Hugh Williams was in charge.

Piano music was by Mrs. Roy Gray. Casket bearers were Clyde Wasson, Kenneth Wasson, Roy Gray, Wayne Belden, Doice Raber and Justin Blomquist. Burial was in the Dexter cemetery.

Last Rites July 3 For Howard I. Mapes

Had Lived Always in Madison & Adair Counties

Funeral services for Howard Mapes of Earlham were held Wednesday afternoon, July 3, at 2:30 p.m. at the Mt. Vernon Methodist church. Rev. Hugh E. Williams was in charge.

Piano music was furnished by Mrs. Roy Gray. The casketbearers were Clyde Wasson, Kenneth Wasson, Roy Gray, Wayne Belden, Doice Raber and Justin Blomquist.

The flower ladies were Mrs. Justin Blomquist, Mrs. Edgar Brown and Mrs. Wayne Belden.

The interment was in the Dexter cemetery.

OBITUARY

Howard Isaac Mapes, son of Charles and Amanda Hutcheson Mapes, was born in Madison County, Iowa, on July 4, 1891.

He grew up and attended the schools of Madison County and has spent his entire life in Madison and Adair counties as a farm laborer and later as farmer.

On July 15, 1912 he was united in marriage to Hesper Aronson and to this union were born three children: Clarence Arthur and Mrs. Marion Carter, both of Dexter, and Mrs. Alice Ramona Lank of Rose Mead, Calif.

He was a great lover of nature and seemed to have a special understanding of wild life. He loved to hunt and fish. He was a hard worker and a good farmer.

Those surviving are: his wife Hesper, the three children already mentioned, two grandson, Wayne and Lee Carter, and three granddaughters, Cathy and Connie Mapes and Marcella Lank.

There were eleven brothers and sisters in his family. Two of them died in infancy; one brother Perry preceded him in death in 1953; also one grandson Kenneth Warren Carter in 1953. His parents also preceded him in death.

The surviving brothers and sisters are: Mrs. Ethel Long of Des Moines; Leo and Sumner Mapes of Earlham; Clarence of Van Meter; Henry of Muscatine; a sister Mrs. Mildred Rohrer of Des Moines, and Lester of Afton. He is also survived by many nephews and nieces.

He was a good friend and neighbor, one who could always be depended on in time of need. He seemed to take special interest in the lives of those he knew. He was a kind devoted father, husband and grandfather.

He died in a tragic accident near Earlham on Sunday, June 30, 1957 at the age of 65 years, 11 months and 26 days.
