Winterset Woman Survived Her Sister's Death by Two Days
Mrs. Fannie Stewart, 73-year-old Winterset woman, died at her home on North Tenth street in Winterset Saturday. She was a sister of Mrs. Jane France who died last Wednesday. She had been ill since before her sister's death.
Mrs. Stewart was the former Fannie Caroline Stephenson, daughter of Frederick and Sophia Stevenson, and was born in Toledo, Ohio on January 22, 1863. For the past 54 years her home had been in Winterset.
She is survived by her husband, William Stewart; a sister, Mrs. Louisa Priest of Saskatchewan, Canada; and a brother, James Stephenson of Cooper.
Funeral services were to be held from the Presbyterian church in Winterset at 2 p.m. today (Tuesday) in charge of the pastor, the Rev. W. P. Fink. Burial was to be made in the Winterset cemetery.

Fannie Caroline Stephenson, the daughter of Fredrick and Sophia Stephenson, was born January 22, 1863 in Toledo, Ohio. She departed this life January 16, 1937 at the age of 73 years, 11 months, 16 days at her home in Winterset, Iowa. She spent her early life in Ohio and Illinois, coming to Iowa in 1883.
She became a member of the Presbyterian church when a small girl which she remained a faithful member until her death.
She was united in marriage to Nathaniel G. Smith of Winterset, September 11, 1883. He departed this life June 25, 1925. She was later united in marriage to William R. Stewart of Winterset, June 8, 1927.
Aunt Fannie, as she was known to everybody, spent her entire married life in and around Winterset. The many homes she worked in during her time, made her many friends.
She leaves to mourn her loss, her husband, a daughter, Mrs. Lida Green of Des Moines, a granddaughter, Mrs. Fannie Jackson of Des Moines, who she raised from babyhood. Also three other grandchildren, Mike Murphy of Quincy, Mass., Mrs. Emma Emerson of Torrance, California and Thomas Murphy of Hot Springs, South Dakota. Also 6 great grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Louise Priest of Canada, a brother, James Stephenson of Cooper, Iowa and a brother William Stephenson. A sister, Jennie France preceded her in death. She also leaves a host of relatives and friends to mourn her death.

Death Follows That Of Her Sister, Mrs. France. Lived Here 50 Years
Mrs. Fannie Stewart, 73, died Saturday at her home in the east part of Winterset, three days after the death of a sister, Mrs. France. Known as Aunt Fannie by scores of men and women who were boys and girls when she worked for their parents, she had friends in all parts of Winterset and was widely known over the county. She had been in ill health the last few years.
And indefatigable worker, she never save herself but labored year after year, always willing to do what was required or asked of her. She was the mother of a daughter and reared to grandchildren in her home. A lover of flowers, on Aunt Fannie’s lawn were always beautiful flowers, many different varieties which she shared with her friends.
Mrs. Stewart lived here 54 years, part of the time on farms near Winterset. She was born in Toledo, Ohio, January 22, 1863, the daughter of Frederick and Sofia Stephenson. Of English descent, she commenced to “work out” when a young girl, continuing what had been her life work until her health failed. She had been a member of the Presbyterian Church since a small girl.
She was married to Nathaniel G. Smith. Several years after his death in 1925 she married W. R. Stewart who survives her. Other relatives are her daughter, Mrs. Lida Green, Des Moines; her granddaughter, Mrs. Fannie Jackson of Des Moines, whom she reared from a baby; three other grandchildren, Mike Murphy, of Quincy, Massachusetts, who made his home with his grandmother many years; Mrs. Emma Emerson of Torrance, California; and Thomas Murphy of Hot Springs, South Dakota; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Louisa Preece of Saskatchewan, Canada; and a brother, James Stephenson of Cooper.
Services were held Tuesday afternoon at two o’clock at the First Presbyterian church with her pastor, Rev. W. P. Fink in charge. Burial was in the Winterset Cemetery.
Mrs. Smith’s death on Saturday followed the death of a sister, Mrs. Eliza Jane Victoria France on January 18 at her home here. Mrs. France was 79 and was born March 29, 1868 in Keokuk. She was married October 27, 1876 two Gardner France who died several years ago. Mrs. France had been a member of the Methodist church since she was eight years old.
The Rev. M. R. Talley conducted funeral services last Thursday at the Ramsey–Richards funeral home. Burial was in the primitive Baptist cemetery.
