Obituary

Jesse Hiatt was born in Randolph county, Indiana, February 19, 1826; moved at an early age to Grant county, where he at the age of 22 was married to Rebecca J. Pearson. In 1856, with a family of five children, they moved to Madison county, Iowa, where he has resided until the time of his death. Five more children were afterward born into the family, all of which are living.

Mr. Hiatt helped to organize and build the Christian church in Peru and was a member at the time of his death. He was an ardent supporter of the gospel and a pillar in the church. In his late illness of cancer in the left eye he has endured untold miseries and agonies, never complaining or repining but ever hoping and resting in the blessed assurance that, “All things work together for good to those who love the Lord.” He suffered thus for over two years and was gradually reduced to a mere skeleton. It was thought he was cured but only for a short time when it broke out anew and he lived only about three weeks.

And praised God that all was well with him before he became unable to talk discernably. His death occurred January 17, 1898, at 5:30 a.m. He leaves his wife and family and one brother, Aaron, of East Peru, to mourn his loss. The funeral services were held in the Christian church at Peru, conducted by Rev. Lamb, pastor, at 2 p.m., January 18, 1898. Interment immediately after in the Peru cemetery.
