Mrs. Elvia May Gillespie, member of a pioneer Madison county family, died at her home near Pitzer last Saturday. Mrs. Gillespie fractured her hip in a fall about two weeks ago, and pneumonia developed last Friday which resulted in her death the next day. She was 74 years of age.
Mrs. Gillespie was the former Elvia May Guye, daughter of George and Lurana (Harris) Guye who were among the earliest settlers of Madison county. She was born November 14, 1862 in Union township and was the last surviving member of this pioneer family.
On January 10, 1884, she was married to Robert Alexander Gillespie of Cambridge, Ohio. They established their home near Chariton, living there for a period of seven years. They then moved to the farm in Jackson township of this county which has remained her home for nearly 50 years.
Mr. and Mrs. Gillespie were the parents of three sons and two daughters; Lurana Mae, Cecil Charley, Raymond Robert, Geraldine M. and Gaylord Guye. Mr. Gillespie died on June 5, 1905 and two of the boys died at Camp Dodge while in the service of their country during the World War. Their deaths occurred on October 14 and October 17, 1918.
Mrs. Gillespie had been a member of the United Presbyterian church at Pitzer since 1901. She was also a member of the Elva Ann Rebekah lodge of Pitzer and a gold star member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Winterset.
She is survived by her two daughters, Mrs. Charley Clark of Winterset and Mrs. Roy Hammond of Dexter; a son, Raymond Gillespie at home; two grandsons, Kenneth Clark and Cecil Gillespie and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday from her home in charge of the Rev. W. C. Porter, United Presbyterian minister, from Waterloo. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery beside the bodies of her husband and two sons.
