DEATH OF CHARLES E. GRAY

Long Time Resident of Madison County Died Monday

Chas. E. Gray, a resident of the Peru neighborhood practically his entire life died at his home Monday morning after a month’s illness. He was 73 years of age.

Mr. Gray’s boyhood home was about one mile northeast of Peru. Thirty-seven years ago he moved to a farm in section five, Ohio township, where he has since resided.

Funeral services were held this afternoon from the Ramsey-Richards’ funeral home and burial made at Peru.

Charles E. Gray

Charles E. Gray, son of Daniel and Ann Gray, was born Sept. 15, 1861, at the old Gray homestead in Scott township, near Peru, Iowa, and has lived practically all of his life near that place.

He passed away at his home Monday morning, Dec. 10th, aged 73 years, 2 months and 25 days.

He was married to Harriet Louise Rhyno, daughter of James A. and Harriet Rhyno, July 2, 1884. After their marriage, they moved to the western part of Iowa for a short time, but soon returned to Ohio township where they were living at the time of his death.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife and seven children: Ernest R. Gray of Des Moines; Mrs. Crete Ray and Mrs. Harriet Smith of Winterset; Fred O. Gray of Norfolk, Nebr.; Edna, Ruth and Harry L. Gray of St. Charles; one son preceding him in death in infancy.

The three grandchildren are Ernest Jr., and Richard Gray of Des Moines, and Harold Smith of Winterset. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Hattie Snapp of Long Beach, Calif., and one brother, L. M. Gray of Malvern; besides many other relatives and friends.

Mr. Gray was one of the early pioneers of Madison county.

He had unusually good health during his lifetime. He possessed a remarkable memory and enjoyed talking with his family and friends about the scenes of his childhood, and the numerous changes which have taken place during his three-score years and ten.

DEATH OF MADISON PIONEER MONDAY

Charles E. Gray, 73, pioneer resident of Madison county, died Monday morning at his home near St. Charles after an illness of several weeks. He was crushed against the side of a barn some time ago by a horse, and complications following the injury were given as the cause of his death. Mr. and Mrs. Gray celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary last summer.

He leaves his wife, and seven children, Mrs. Fred Ray and Mrs. Harry Smith of Winterset, Ernest of Des Moines, Fred of Norfolk, Nebraska, Harry at home, Miss Ruth who teaches at Marshalltown and Miss Edna who is a teacher at Melbourne. All were present for the services.

Services were held Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 at the Ramsey-Richards funeral home by the Rev. A. R. Weed; burial was in the Peru cemetery.
