Wednesday, May 18, 1938MRS. EMILY DAVIS PASSED SATURDAY
One of Oldest Residents of County Succumbs at Age of 89
Mrs. Emily Davis, a resident of Madison county for 66 years, died last Saturday at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Pat Banks after several years of failing health. She was 89 years of age, and one of the oldest residents of the county.
Mrs. Davis was the former Emily Jane Quate, and was born at High Point, North Carolina, on January 11, 1849. She was the daughter of Thomas and Sarah Toomes Quate. She was married, in October 1867, to Lemiel S. Davis, and with her husband moved to Indiana. In 1872 they came to this county, settling in Union township to engage in farming.
In 1910, they moved to Winterset, living here until Mr. Davis' death in 1937. Since then Mrs. Davis had made her home with her children.
Mrs. Davis was the mother of 10 children. As a young woman she united with the United Brethren church, and attended services as long as her health permitted.
She is survived by five daughters: Mrs. Florence Currier of Seattle, Wash., Mrs. Mary McDaniels of Granada, Minn., Mrs. Nellie Mellor of Des Moines, Mrs. Bessie Cord of Winterset, and Mrs. Dollie Clampitt of Greenfield. She also leaves 21 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday from Tidrick's funeral home in charge of the Rev. H. L. Olmstead of the Church of Christ. Burial was made in the McDonald cemetery.
