Winterset Woman Had Been Resident of County Since Early Days
Mrs. Mary Jane Hermon, a resident of Madison county since pioneer days died at her home in Winterset on Wednesday of last week. She was 85 years of age. Mrs. Hermon was the daughter of Harvey and Cynthia Cochran Smith, and was born in Marion county, Ind., on Dec. 8, 1852.
She came to Madison county as a small child and lived here ever since. The Smith family lived about nine miles north of Winterset until March, 1861, when they moved to the Zion neighborhood, and she lived there until 1915, when she, with her husband and family, moved to Winterset. Shortly after moving to Winterset, she brought her church letter and joined the Baptist church.
She was married to James Hermon on February 4, 1875. To this union were born eight children, which are as follows: Harvey, who died at the age of two, Charles Wesley Hermon, Albert Hermon, Walter Hermon and Mrs. Beulah Braden of Winterset, Mrs. J. F. Wilson of Libertyville, Ill., Mrs. D. B. Adams and Ross Hermon of Creston.
Her husband preceded her in death on June 13, 1930. She is survived by the seven children named above, and twenty-nine grandchildren, and twenty-two great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Baptist church Saturday, Sept 3, at 2 p.m. Interment was made in the Winterset cemetery. The services were in charge of Rev. J. H. Cochrane, Jr.
