M.L. Thomson is Dead

News came by wire to the local relatives of Major M. L. Thomson that he had passed away Friday night at about midnight at his home in Tonkawah, Ark., after a paralytic stroke occurring a few hours previous, this being the third successive attack in the last few years. His death was not unexpected but comes as a severe loss not only to the children and brother residing here but also to the community that knew him as a resident and business man for several years. Funeral services were held at Tonkawah on Tuesday and interment made at that place.

The deceased is survived by his wife and eleven children, namely; Hugh, Agnes, Maggie and Amie of Earlham, Maud of Pomona, Cal., and Lizzie, Mabel, Nellie, Robert, Isaac and Mary, the latter six being less well known, generally in Earlham. The eldest daughter, Jennie, passed away in earlier years.

Mark L. Thomson was born in Dumfrieshire, Scotland, on the 7th of January, 1835, a son of Hugh M. and Jennie (Robertson) Thomson, both native Scotch people. The family moved on June 17, 1844 to a farm near Davenport, Iowa, where he spent most of his boyhood years. At the age of 27 years he enlisted in response to the ninety days call for volunteers, which was merged into the three years period, serving under Captain Liller. He was wounded at the battle of Shiloh, came home and shortly afterward recruited a company, Co. C. 20th Iowa Inf. of which he was elected Captain, serving thus until the end of the war, at which time he held the rank of Major.

He came to Madison County in 1865, after the war, settling on the farm now owned by C. O. Clements and occupied by W. E. Hadley. Shortly thereafter he was married to Miss Nichols, to which union six children were born, of whom the daughter Jennie precedes him to the life beyond.

His first business move was to Earlham, where he first owned the implement business, afterwards purchasing the lumber yard now owned by Julius Tank. He disposed of this business in 1903 to French & Son, and has since made his residence successively in Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and latterly in Oklahoma. Mrs. Thomson passed away in 1884 and in 1888 Mr. Thomson was married to Kate Torode who survives.

DEATH OF M. L. THOMPSON

Former Earlham Citizen Dies at Tonkawa, Arkansas

M. L. Thomson, for many years as prominent business man of Earlham, passed away on the 15th, at his home in Tonkawa, Ark. His wife and several children survive him. Mark Thomson, as he was generally known, moved to a farm south of Earlham soon after the war and later moved to Earlham to engage in the implement business.

In 1903 he disposed of his business interests and moved to Arkansas. He was an ardent Republican in politics and whatever engaged in, business or politics, he was aggressive and forceful. Four of his children, besides other relatives, still reside in Earlham.
