Robert Farquhar, who died in Winterset, August 25, 1911, was born in County Tyrone, Ireland, May 2, 1826. At the age of twenty-three, he came to America and for six years lived in New York City. In 1855 he moved westward with the tide of emigration, and located at Garden Grove, Iowa. In 1868, Mr. and Mrs. Farquhar moved to a farm just over the east line of Adair county. Here they resided until retiring from the farm in 1889, when they moved to Winterset.
On April 2, 1857, he was united in marriage to Francis Brown at Garden Grove. Six children blessed their marriage. Of these, two died when less than two years old. Emma, the wife of James Lindsey died at the age of twenty five; Mrs. Samuel Haymond, who died about eleven years ago. Mrs. Farquhar and two children, Mrs. Calia Doak of Winterset and Hugh B. Farquhar of Orient, remain.
Mr. Farquhar was one of a family of seven children, four of whom have passed away during the past two years. He is survived by two brothers, Thomas of Humeston, Iowa, and James of Evansville, Ind., and one sister, Mrs. Anna Jane Given of Madison County, Iowa.
When a young man in Ireland he united with the Presbyterian church and remained steadfast in the faith until the end of life's journey. His health failed rapidly during the past few years and for some months prior to his death was confined to his home and suffered much, but bore his affliction with christian fortitude and expressed his readiness to go.
He was a man of tireless energy and though he started in life's battle without a dollar, his industry and hard labor soon made him one of the most successful farmers in this community. He was universally respected for that rugged honesty so typical of the people of his nationality, and beneath an unpublished surface was hidden a warm heart and a disposition to help his brother man.
Funeral services were held from the late home on Sunday afternoon and burial in the Winterset cemetery.
