L. O. CAREY DIES IN HOSPITAL

Winterset Merchant Submits to Operation, Which Terminates Fatally

L. O. Carey, a Winterset merchant, died in Des Moines yesterday forenoon at the Methodist hospital where he submitted to an operation for gall stones, on Monday. The announcement of his death was a decided shock to his friends throughout the county, few of whom knew him to be in ill health. He had suffered intensely at times from stomach or other internal ailment for several years, but when able to be at his place of business, was of unusually jolly disposition and on this account, many of his acquaintances were unprepared for the announcement of his death.

Mr. Carey moved to this county from Jewell Junction, Hamilton county, about ten years ago and bought the old McGee homestead in Douglas township. In 1906, he engaged in the grocery business, on the northwest corner of the square.

The body was brought home last evening and funeral services will be held tomorrow from the Methodist church at 2:30 p.m.

Surviving members of the family are the wife, and four sons, F. D., who is principal of schools at Auburn, Iowa; Walter, who resides at Conata, S. D., and Dean, Edgar and Harold, who live at the parental home.
