THE GRIM REAPER
Ramsey Acheson, I. S. Ford and Samuel Myers, Three of Madison County’s Old Time Residents Pass Away
Samuel Myers was born in Washington county, Pennsylvania, June 6, 1830, where he grew to manhood. He married Miss Alice A. Wines, of the same county, and who had been his acquaintance and schoolmate from childhood. In 1854 they emigrated to Iowa and settled in Madison county on the farm now known as the Brock farm, in Lincoln township.
In 1861 he enlisted in the 4th Iowa cavalry and served four years in the Union army.
After the war he made his home most of the time in Winterset, but spending part of the time at a farm he owned in the western part of this county and in Adair county.
To Mr. and Mrs. Myers were born five children. Of them, three, Mrs. Flora Taylor, James and Harry Myers, with his widow, survive him.
His death was caused by cancer, which for several years had been growing despite all attempts at checking. The end came Monday evening, April 21, 1902, and with it an end of the suffering that had become intense.
The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the family residence, the religious services conducted by Rev. W. H. P. MacDonald, pastor of the First Presbyterian church. Pitzer Post, G. A. R., had charge of the ceremonies with the ritual of the order.
In Samuel Myers a good citizen, a kind husband and father passes to his rest.
