Events of Days Gone By
Thirty Years Ago (February 8, 1882)

Jacob Bennett of Madison township, one of the first settlers in the county, died at the age of 87.

JACOB BENNETT--Died in Madison township, Madison county, Iowa Feb. 1st 1882, Jacob Bennett, at the ripe old age of 87 years. Mr. Bennett was one of the early settlers of Madison county, was born in Fayette county, Penn., April 19th 1795; moved to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1803, when it was but a small village, lived there three years, then to Hamilton, Ohio, from there back to Pennsylvania, where he was married in 1921 to Miss S. Shaller, thence to Switzerland Co., Indiana, from thence to Marion Co, near Indianapolis in 1932; remained there twenty years, then moved to Madison township where he lived until his death, being in the 87th year of his age.

There was born to him and wife 18 children, seven of which are now dead, and the remaining eleven are married and citizens of this county, and were at his bedside when he breathed his last.

He died very vain, and easy, even without a struggle. The wife of his youth and mother of his children died about four years ago, after which he purchased a double monument and had her inscription placed there---and gave orders for his to be carved thereto in these words:

"Remember friends, as you pass by,
As you are now, so once was I
As I am now, so you must be;
Prepare for death and follow me."

This is the record of Mr. Bennett's long, honored and useful life, as it is given to us. It is one most remarkable in many respects. Even out of eighteen children yet alive, the youngest being 40 years old. To think of his strength and energy even to the last, when =======. At the time of his death he was managing his own farm of 1,000 acres, and had extensive improvements begun for next year.

Eighty-seven years old. what does this imply? Why, that Mr. Bennett lived under every president of the United States, having been born in ====
