Winterset, IowaMERLE NELSON AGED 20, DIES
Merle D. Nelson, 20-year-old young man of near St. Charles, died this Tuesday evening, Aug. 12, at Madison county Memorial hospital in Winterset. He had become ill about five months ago and underwent surgery which disclosed a cancer. He had been in failing health since that time.
Merle was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Nelson of near St. Charles. He was born and spent his entire life in that community, and graduated from the St. Charles high school with the class of 1957.
He is survived by his parents; and by nine brothers and sisters.
Funeral arrangements had not been completed as the Madisonian went to press this Wednesday.

Funeral services were held last Friday from the St. Charles Methodist church for Merle D. Nelson, 20, of St. Charles, whose death had occurred Aug. 12 at Memorial hospital in Winterset. The Rev. Joe King of Prescott and Rev. Marlin Love of St. Charles conducted the services. His former class-mates at St. Charles high school served as pall bearers, and burial was made in the St. Charles cemetery.
Merle was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Nelson of St. Charles. He was born there Dec. 15, 1937, and spent his entire life in that community. Since graduation from St. Charles high school with the class of 1957, he had been employed at the Farrel and Neal Chevrolet company in West Des Moines.
In addition to his parents, he leaves five brothers, Wayne of St. Charles, Vernon and Eugene of Des Moines, and Max and Larry at home; and four sisters, Mrs. Jessie Clericerzio of Tampa, Fla., Mrs. Shirley Ayers of St. Charles, and Lois and Donna at home.
