TWO WINTERSET MEN ACCIDENT VICTIMS

Howard Cummings Is Near Death in Des Moines Hospital.

Howard Cummings, 33 year old Winterset man, was near death this week as the result of an automobile accident near Des Moines Sunday morning, in which his father, Fred Cummings, was seriously injured also.

The men were returning from northern Iowa to Winterset and neared the curve on Highway No. 28 about two miles west of the Des Moines airport at about 3 a. m. The older Cummings was driving, when the front wheels apparently locked and the car turned over several times, rolling down an embankment and hitting a tree. An inspection of the car by Polk county deputy sheriffs showed that the brake rods were broken.

The injured men were taken to the Broadlawns general hospital, when the younger Cummings’ leg was amputated. He was also found to be suffering from concussion of the brain, and a skull fracture was feared. His condition is critical. The elder Cummings sustained several broken ribs and minor injuries, but is expected to recover.
