Benton Jones was born in Van Buren county, Iowa, May 16, 1851 and departed this life at the home of his daughter in Truro, Iowa, July 5, 1937 at the age of 86 years, 1 month and 19 days.
When but four years old his parents moved to Clarke county as one of the earliest settlers in the county. His life was spent in Clarke and Madison counties, except for a short time he lived in Missouri
On September 5, 1869 he was united in marriage to Laura Ann Foreman and to this union 11 children were born; Mrs. Florence Roby, Mrs. W. O. Hawk, John L. Jones, Mrs. J. F. Gracey, Niles N. Jones, Mrs. Bert Gracey, Mrs. T. E. Musselman, Hazel B. Jones and Ethyl C. Henthorne. Two children died in infancy.
On his 21st year he joined the Order of Masons and continued a loyal membership unto the end.
The companion passed away less than a year ago and he felt very keenly his great loss.
He loved his home and in the declining years nothing seemed to cheer him more than the visit of his children.
He leaves to mourn his loss the nine children, 36 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, one brother and a sister of Long Beach California and other relatives and friends.
