ANDREW J. SHAFFER

Andrew J. Shaffer was born April 15, 1845 at Switzerland county, Indiana and left this world May 9, 1937, aged 92 years and 24 days. He was a member of a family of ten children. Only one, a sister, Emma Fogglesong of Stuart, survives.

He moved to this county in 1855 and spent the remainder of his life in and around this community. He has long been a faithful member of the United Presbyterian church at Pitzer.

On March 10, 1868 he was united in marriage to Margaret Cowden. To this union were born four children; Effie, Bert and Clarence, all deceased and Clyde who lives at home.

His wife, Clyde, 3 granddaughters and 5 great grandchildren survive him.

Burial was made in the Stringtown cemetery.

LAST RITES HELD FOR A. J. SHAFFER

Had Lived In County 82 Years and On Same Farm Half Century

Andrew J. Shaffer, 92, one of the oldest residents of Madison county, died Sunday morning at the Winterset hospital, where he was taken about 10 days before, after falling and fracturing a hip. Due to advanced age, the shock of the fall and the injury proved fatal.

He had been a resident of the county 82 years and had lived at his home in Douglas township 66 years, moving there with his wife in 1871. His parents came to the county from Indiana in 1851 when he was 10 years old. He was born in Switzerland county, Indiana, April 15, 1845.

He was married March 10, 1868, who Margaret Cowden. Mrs. Cowden who was 89, has lived in the county 81 years, her parents moving to the county from Ohio when she was eight years old. Mr. and Mrs. Shaffer observed their 69th wedding anniversary March 10.

Mr. Shaffer was one of the fine old men of the county, known and respected far and near, by several generations of Madison citizens. He was a member of the Pitzer United Presbyterian church. He leaves his wife and son Clyde who lives at home, three grandchildren and five great grandchildren. A daughter and two sons are deceased. His sister, Mrs. Emma Foglesong of Stuart, is the last of the family of 10 children.

The Rev. W. G. Robertson, pastor of the United Presbyterian church, conducted the service at the home Tuesday afternoon. Burial was in the Stringtown cemetery. Pallbearers were Mortie Drake, Frank Klingman, John Cline, J. W. Eckstein, Luther McDonald, Earl Miller.
