MARIAN LOUISE GOODENBERGER, WINTERSET, IOWA

Marian Louise Goodenberger, 78, of Winterset and formerly of Panora, died Friday, April 20, 2007, at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 26, at the First Baptist Church in Winterset with Pastor Mike Carlson officiating. Visitation will be held from 1–8 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, at Ochiltree Funeral Service in Winterset, where the family will be present to receive friends from 5–8 p.m. Memorials may be directed to a fund which has been established in Marian’s name.

Marian Louise Burd was born Feb. 14, 1929, in Chicago and was adopted from the Iowa Children’s Home on June 6, 1929, by the Rev. W.C. and Reba (Talley) Henn. She graduated from high school in Yale, Iowa, and then attended the Iowa Methodist School of Nursing where she graduated in 1950.

Her marriage to Emery Lee Goodenberger took place at the First Methodist Church in Des Moines on Sept. 3, 1950, officiated by her father, Rev. W.C. Henn, and her grandfather, Rev. Roy Talley. To this union six children were born.

While Emery was in law school, Marian worked in the birth rooms at Iowa Methodist Hospital. In 1953, she and Emery moved to Winterset. While a nurse in Winterset, Marian worked in the operating and emergency rooms at Madison County Memorial Hospital for 19 years. She later worked as the school nurse for Winterset Community Schools for 20 years, retiring in 1989. Following her retirement, Marian and Emery made their home at Lake Panorama near Panora, Iowa. In June of 2006, they moved back to Winterset.

In 1974, Marian was united with her biological mother, Helen Burd, her sister, Ruth, and aunts, uncles and cousins who were all originally from the Murray and Osceola areas.

Marian was always active in the community. While in Winterset, she was instrumental in the founding of the Multi-Purpose Center. After moving to Lake Panorama, Marian was a member of the Brethren Church and Women’s Fellowship. She also was a member of the Par 3 Golf Club and was influential in the building of the clubhouse. She started social get-acquainted groups; was a member and officer of HALO; Garden Club; and was a contributing editor of “Around the Lake” column for the Panorama Times. Marian loved to play cards in many regular groups; was an avid Hawk fan; and was interested in most sports — having played basketball and softball in high school.

Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Emery Goodenberger of Winterset; four daughters, Marcia Bankus (Dale) of Quincy, Ill., Rhonda Wagoner (Jeff) of Winterset, Sondra Smith (Dale) of Jefferson, and Pamela Anderson (Paul) of St. Louis, Mo.; two sons, Perry Goodenberger (Terri) of Winterset and Marty Goodenberger (Stacy) of Des Moines; and 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her adopted parents; biological parents; and two grandchildren, Michael Siebels Jr. and Ashton Marie Goodenberger.
