CLARA SAWHILL DIES AT 88 YEARS

Death Occurred Last Friday at Memorial Hospital In Winterset

Mrs. Clara Sawhill of Winterset died last Friday, Dec. 26 at Memorial hospital. She was 86 years of age.

Mrs. Sawhill was a native of Illinois, where she was born Jan. 5, 1870. She was the former Clara Eunice George, daughter of Francis and Ellen Kipp George. In 1875 she moved to Madison county, with her parents. With the exception of seven years in Canyon City, Colo., the remainder of her life was spent in the same home, known as the "Old George Farm", nine miles west of Winterset.

As a young woman she attended normal school at Dexter. She was married Feb. 12, 1890, to James Wallace Sawhill. That marriage extended over a period of 63 years.

As a young woman she was a member of the Webster Methodist church. After her marriage she transferred to the Pitzer U. P. church. Upon moving to Winterset, she identified herself with the United Presbyterian church here.

Surviving are five children, Raymond Sawhill of LaHambra, Calif., Mrs. Bessie Gillespie and Gaylord Sawhill of Winterset, George Sawhill of Flint, Mich., and Mrs. Bertha Dilts of Colorado Springs, Colo. She also leaves 12 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and a brother, Walt George of Winterset.

Funeral services were held Monday from the Richards Funeral home here, conducted by the Rev. George DeF. Fisher, pastor of the First United Presbyterian church in Winterset. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
