OBITUARY

Perry Simon Roderick, oldest son of John W. and Malissa F. Roderick, was born in Jefferson township, Madison county, Iowa, on October 11, 1871. At the age of 11 he went to Kansas to live with his grandfather and aunt. During his stay there he went to school and spent the summers herding cattle. After five years in Kansas he returned to Iowa, working in the vicinity of his birth place.

On August 27, 1903, he was united in marriage to Sidney Sole. To this union were born two children, Mary Veneta and Walter Alvin.

While a young man he united with the United Brethren church of North River, and later he transferred his membership to the Methodist church in Earlham.

In July of 1920 he joined the Odd Fellow Lodge, and was a faithful member, taking part in all the work until he was injured in an accident in Earlham a few years ago. He has been in poor health since that time.

He was taken to the Madison county Memorial hospital at Winterset on February 26, 1958, where he passed away on March 18, at the age of 86 years, five months and seven days.

Mr. Roderick was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Alec and John, and one sister, Lillie Reigle. He is survived by his wife, Sidney, a daughter, Veneta Reeves, and a son, Walter, both of Adel; one granddaughter, Shirley Hunziker of Des Moines; three grandsons, Thomas Reeves, Paul Nichols, and James Roderick, all of Adel; one great granddaughter, Valerie Jean Hunziker of Des Moines; two sisters, Alice Meyer of Van Meter, and Mary Kent of Winterset; several nieces and nephews, and a host of friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

The funeral service was held in the local Methodist church on Friday, March 21, at 2 p.m. Since the pastor was out of town, the service was led by L. Willard Reynolds, pastor of the Friends church. Mervyn McLennan, accompanied by Mrs. McLennan, sang two gospel hymns. The pall bearers were: Alvin Meyer, Earl Meyer, Lloyd Reigle, Fred Kent, William Kent and Harold Kent. Ushers were L. R. Goeldner and Harold Brown. The funeral director was Gail Leeper. Interment was in the Earlham cemetery.
