Pioneer Settler Had Lived 82 Years on Douglas Township Farm
The death of James Abrahams at the Winterset hospital last Wednesday closed the career of a man whose long life had been identified with Madison county since its earliest days.
Mr. Abrahams established the unique record of having lived on his farm in Sections 23 and 24 of Douglas township for 82 years. He was nearing 91 years of age at the time of his death.
Death was due to a heart attack which followed injuries he received March 11 when he broke his hip in a fall.
Mr. Abrahams was born June 5, 1845 at Peru, Indiana. He was the son of Steven and Sarah Kelso Abrahams. He came with his parents to Madison county in 1854, the family making the trip via Missouri with four wagons. James Abrahams was 9 years old when the family arrived here and homesteaded the farm in Douglas township. That place remained his home until the day of his death.
Mr. Abrahams was always known as an upstanding citizen and a successful farmer. In 1879 he was married to Miss Clara Sargent. They were the parents of four children, all of whom survive. They are Will Abrahams, Walter Abrahams, and Laura Abrahams of Winterset and Leonard Abrahams, who operates the home farm. Mrs. Abrahams died in 1930. He also leaves 11 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held from Tidrick's funeral home last Friday in charge of the Rev. H. L. Olmstead, pastor of the Church of Christ. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
