OBITUARY

Cyrus Alva Carey, son of Daniel and Jane Lancaster Carey, was born near Carmel, Indiana, on August 17, 1871, and passed away at a nursing home in Marshalltown, Iowa, on October 30, 1958, after a lingering illness of three years.

When a child he came with his parents to Marshall County, Iowa.

In 1892 he was united in marriage with Minnie S. Cook of Bangor, Iowa. To this union two daughters were born: Lorene (Mrs. John Wright) now deceased, and Velma (Mrs. Axel Naig) of Marshalltown, Iowa.

The Carey's moved in 1895 to a farm in Dallas county, near Earlham. Here they lived until Alva retired from active farm work and moved into their beautiful new house in town. In 1955, because of failing health, they moved to Marshalltown to be near their daughter.

Alva Carey was a birthright member of the Friends church. Since their farm was near the Garden Grove United Brethren Church, he and his family attended there for over twenty years. After moving to Earlham, they again united with Friends, where he retained his membership until the time of his death. He loved the church and Sunday School and held offices of responsibility and trust. He served as an elder for a number of years.

He had a keen interest also in the affairs of the community, and found many opportunities for service. It can truly be said of him that he was a man of integrity and usefulness.

Alva was a gentle and loving husband and father, a good neighbor and a true friend. During his long illness he bore his pain and weariness patiently.

He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Axel Naig of Marshalltown, four grandsons--Wendell C. Wright of Council Bluffs, Iowa; John Otis Wright and Donald Eugene Wright, both of Des Moines, and Carroll Coulter of Woodland, California--one grandaughter, Vera Gearhart of Laurel, Iowa, and twelve great grandchildren, besides other relatives and many friends.

The funeral service was held in the local Friends church on Sunday afternoon, November 2, at 2:00 o'clock. The pastor, L. Willard Reynolds, officiated. Alma Mapes and Gertrude Conrad sang, accompanied by Doris Cook at the organ. Interment was in the Earlham cemetery.
