Melvin Henry Dalen was born on August 22, 1896 in Chippewa County, Minnesota near the town of Montevideo. He passed away very suddenly at his home in Earlham on Wednesday evening, August 2, 1961.
He was one of ten children belonging to Mr. and Mrs. Ole Dalen. When he was a young boy he was confirmed in the Immanuel Lutheran church near his home. He attended automobile college in Omaha, Nebraska and graduated from there. He came to Dexter where he was in the automotive business with his brother Oliver. They later moved to Redfield where they had a similar business. Then Melvin joined the Hunter Brothers and was with them for nearly 40 years. He moved to Earlham in 1942 where he was manager of the Hunter Hardware until his death.
On October 1, 1925 he was married to Gertrude Frederick of Dexter. A niece Betty Dalen came to bless this home when she was five years old, after her mother's death, and made her home with them until her marriage.
Melvin's hobbies were fishing and woodworking. He spent many leisure hours making things in his workshop. He is a member of the Masonic lodge and Eastern Star of Redfield.
His father, mother, two sisters Julia and Clarice, and a brother Seymor, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife Gertrude; three sisters, Olga Knudson of Arlington, Washington, Rudell Haugland of Seattle, Washington, and Ruth Adrian of Wayne, New Jersey; and three brothers, Oliver of Redfield, Clarence of Montevideo, Minnesota and Clifford of Seattle, Washington.
He loved his home and family and was always planning for the future. He will be missed by his many relatives and friends.
