Mrs. Lula Bechtel Thompson was born in Geneva, Nebraska August 16, 1873. She was one of nine children born to John and Jane Stanley Bechtel.
The Bechtels moved to Earlham when Lula was ten years old. Lula married John J. Thompson and to this union six children were born. Mr. Thompson was a contractor and he built many of the houses in Earlham and surrounding area.
In 1935 her husband, John J., passed away. Two years later she moved to Ottumwa to assist her daughter whose husband was stricken by polio. In 1939 this son-in-law passed away and she continued to live and assist her daughter in raising her family.
At the time of her death she belonged to the Willard Street Methodist church in Ottumwa, having transferred her membership from the Earlham Methodist church several years ago.
Mrs. Thompson helped raise three families. She was one of the older members of her parents' family, she raised six children of her own and helped her daughter raise a family.
She leaves in passing five children, seventeen grandchildren, eight great granchildren and a host of friends.
