Apparently Recovering From Surgery, Has Fatal Relapse
Paul E. Newton, member of a well-known Winterset family, died at Methodist hospital in Des Moines this Monday, Feb. 2. He had undergone surgery there Jan. 23 for correction of a spinal condition, and his recovery had progressed to the point where he was planning to leave the hospital when stricken with complications which caused his death. He was 42 years of age.
His death occurred a week after that of his father, C. L. Newton of Winterset, who died here Jan. 25.
Mr. Newton was a son of C. L. and Mary Grace Akin Newton, and was born in Madison county Nov. 10, 1916. Most of his life was spent in Madison county, except the last 12 years, 10 years of which was spent at Stanzel. For the last two years he had lived at Des Moines.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served two years and two months in the U. S. Air force. He was a member of the American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, the former Marilyn Bingaman, to whom he was married at Kansas City on June 29, 1957. He also leaves two daughters, Holly and Christine; his step-mother, Mrs. Eva Newton; and three brothers, Kenneth Newton of Greenfield, and Donald and Phillip Newton of Winterset.
Funeral services will be held this Thursday at 2 p.m. from the Winterset Methodist church, conducted by the Rev. John Porath. Burial will be made in the Winterset cemetery.
