Bud Lane, son of T. O. and Stella Lane, was born near Winterset, October 29, 1912. His early life was spent on a farm east of Winterset where he attended Patterson schools. Later his parents moved to Shannon City and Thayer communities where he attended high school and grew to manhood.
On October 28, 1939 he was married to Donna Belle Sandusky of Earlham and they established their home in Earlham where they have lived since with the exception of short intervals when his work and his service in the United States Navy took him elsewhere.
Donna Belle and Bud were the parents of five children: Stella, Donna Lee, La Vona, Tommy and Deanie, all of whom survive their daddy. Bud was a devoted and loving husband, father, son, brother and friend, always giving of himself in the most unselfish ways.
His motto for his rich life of service to his family and fellowmen can best be expressed by these words of Charles Meigs:
"Lord, help me to live from day to day
In such a self-forgetful way
And know that all I do for You
I must needs do for others,
Others, Lord, yes, others.
Let this my motto be;
Help me to live for others
That I may live for Thee."Bud was a member of the Earlham Methodist church and the Earlham American Legion Post. Bud took an active interest in his town and community affairs. He loved farming and especially enjoyed his work with the men of the Co-op Elevators and Farmers Grain Dealers. He was employed at the Farmers Grain Dealers at Avon Lake when he became ill.
On March 21, 1944 Bud entered the armed forces, serving in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Kenneth Whitinng until his discharge January 6, 1946.
He enjoyed abundant good health until April of this year. On June 1, 1959 he entered Veterans hospital in Des Moines for a thorough physical checkup. On Saturday, June 6 while visiting on the hospital grounds with his family, he suffered a coronary thrombosis from which he never recovered, and passed away at the hospital on July 6, 1959.
Besides his loving wife and children, Bud leaves to mourn his passing, his mother, Stella Lane of Thayer; four brothers, Merl of West Des Moines, Phil of Van Meter, Rex of Virginia, Minn., and Don of Davis, California; one sister Mrs. Lorange Johnson of Creston, Iowa, many nieces and nephews, his business associates and a host of friends.
