Page 1Death of Miss Lina Wilkinson
Miss Lina Wilkinson, a well-known resident of Winterset, died at her home on West Court avenue early Saturday morning, February 22. Miss Wilkinson became ill last fall, and went to Rochester for an operation and treatment. She remained there a number of weeks, but came home in December. A malignant growth had developed, and her condition continued to grow worse. She became critically ill last Tuesday and death came Saturday morning.
Miss Wilkinson, who was 57 years of age, was a daughter of the late Judge and Mrs. A. W. Wilkinson, and was born here June 20, 1872. She was graduated from the local high school in 1890. Following her graduation she attended the Iowa State Teachers college at Cedar Falls, and taught school for several years. She then took up nurse’s training, in a hospital at Cincinnati, Ohio, where her brother, Ralph, was a practicing physician. Since then she had engaged in her profession of nursing, and had assisted in many homes in Winterset, Madison county, and in Des Moines. Lina, as she was familiarly known by many here, cared for a number of sick people, and always thought more of assisting others than she did of her own physical needs. During the late years of her parents’ lives she gave up her professional work to remain in the home and to assist in their care.
Miss Wilkinson was a member of the Winterset Trinity Episcopal church, and Father Wyckoff, of Des Moines, conducted her funeral services Monday afternoon, February 24th, at Tidrick’s funeral home. The services were at two o’clock, and burial was made in the Wilkinson lot in the Winterset cemetery.
Miss Lina, who was the oldest member of the family is survived by three brothers and a sister: Dr. Ralph Wilkinson, of Cincinnati; J. N. Wilkinson, of Dixon, Illinois, and Phil R. Wilkinson, Winterset attorney, and Mrs. Maude Parker, of Washington, D. C. A sister, Mrs. Ruth Buffington, died a number of years ago.
