Had Served Overseas With Company A During First World War
Ambery B. Downs, a well known resident of the St. Charles community and a veteran of World War I, died Monday, July 6, at Veteran's hospital in Des Moines. He was 71 years of age.
Mr. Downs was born June 5, 1888, at St. Charles, a son of James A. and Mary McCandless Downs. Most of his life was spent in Madison County, near St. Charles and Truro. He was the last surviving member of his family.
As a young man he enlisted in Company A, 168th Infantry regiment of the Rainbow division, for service during World War I. He was wounded in action in France.
He was married Sept. 10, 1919, to Doris Rundell. She died on Feb. 23, 1951. In 1953 he was married to Pearl Mabus and she also preceded him in death in 1958.
He was a member of Gripp-Williamson post No. 674, Veterans of Foreign Wars, at St. Charles.
Funeral services were held July 8 from the Kale Funeral home at Truro, in charge of the Rev. Mr. Love, pastor of the St. Charles Christian church. Military ritual was conducted by members of the St. Charles V.F.W. post. Burial was made in the Young cemetery at Truro.
