December 7, 1905Death Of J. O. CRISS
Prominent Stockman and Farmer Expires Suddenly
J. O. Criss, a well known farmer and stock raiser of Union township, died on Sunday afternoon at the home of his brother in-law, Abner R. Duff, who lives on the old Casper place northeast of Winterset.
Mr. Criss was in his usual health on Saturday and was in town late that evening helping Mr. Duff load some cattle for shipment to Chicago. After starting home he was taken sick with a severe attack of neuralgia of the stomach, and stopped at Mr. Duff's which is on his road home. Physicians were summoned from Winterset but in spite of all that could be done he passed away at 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon.
The deceased was an enterprising and hard working man in the prime of life and the sorrow sustained by his wife and children is generally shared in by his neighbors and acquaintances.
Funeral services were held from the little Baptist church just north of the city on Tuesday afternoon and were conducted by Rev. Fred Berry of the Winterset Baptist church.

The sudden death of Joe Criss, of Union township, which occurred last Sunday afternoon was a surprise and shock to his many friends in the county. Dr. Davenport was telephoned for and at the same time his wife. Dr. Davenport pronounced it perforation of the bowels and very serious. Dr. Skinner was called in consultation and everything possible was done but to no avail and he died as above stated, and was buried Tuesday afternoon in the Baptist cemetery north of town.
Mr. Criss was one of the prosperous and progressive farmers of Union township and greatly respected by all with whom he came in contact. He was forty-six years of age and leaves a wife and seven children.

Joe Criss, a well-known and prosperous farmer residing in Union township died suddenly at the home of his brother-in-law, A. R. Duff, Sunday afternoon, after an illness of less than twenty-four hours.
Criss had been helping load stock nearly all day at the stockyards and started home in the evening, driving a team belonging to his brother-in-law, hitched to a hay wagon. When he arrived at the Duff farm, the old Casper place just North of Cedar creek, who jumped from the wagon to open the gate and was immediately seized with a severe pain. He had to be helped to the house and a physician was telephoned for.
Later in the evening after the physician had gone home he became much worse and two physicians from town went to the house. Criss died Sunday evening in great pain. The physicians say that his death was caused by a rupture of the bowels, probably caused by an abscess. Criss had similar attacks before and had always recovered from them in a day or two.
The funeral occurred Tuesday and the interment was at the Baptist cemetery north of the city.
Criss was a hard-working farmer and had made considerable money, not only from good farming but from the sale of various farms, bought and sold on the land speculation was at its height. He lived in Missouri for a year or two but came back three or four years ago.
