Obituary of Mattie Johnson Long

Mattie Johnson Long was born in Porter county, Indiana, Nov. 27, 1848, and died at her home Feb. 5, 1905, at 9:15 o'clock, aged 56 years, 2 months, 8 days.

She came to Iowa in 1867, and was married to Michael Longmire February 6, 1863. To this union was born three children, two sons, one daughter. On November 14, 1882, her husband died leaving her and her three children to morn the loss.

On December 25, 1883 she was married to John T. Long in Des Moines. The husband and three children are left to morn the loss of an affectionate, loving wife and mother as well as a host of friends for whom she always had a kind and pleasant word.

She united with the Christian church in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1892. She has been in poor health for the past year, and for the last three months was bedfast. She suffered great pain but always bore her suffering patiently and never a complaint came from her.

The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock in the Christian church in DeSoto, conducted by the pastor, and was attended by a large number of friends. Interment was in De Soto cemetery, beside the remains of her first husband.

Mrs. John Long died at her home northeast of town Sunday February 5, after a lingering illness of several weeks. Funeral services were held in the Christian church at DeSoto Tuesday afternoon, after which she was laid to rest in the DeSoto cemetery.

Transcribers note: First name taken from gravestone. Matilda and her husband Michael lived in Madison County at one time. One of their children, Alonzo is buried at the Earlham Cemetery and one of their daughters was married in Madison County.
