Pfc. Dale E. Schoonover of Winterset was killed in action in Belgium on Dec. 17, according to a telegram received Feb. 23 by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Schoonover. He had previously been reported as missing in action since that date in a telegram received here on Jan. 17.

Private Schoonover was 19 years of age; and was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Schoonover. He attended the army through Selective Service on Oct. 13, 1943, and spent five months at Camp Wolters and six months at Camp Maxey, both in Texas. He was injured at Camp Wolters and went to Camp Maxey for treatment. He was trained as a jeep driver, and was sent overseas late last September. Over there he was assigned to a machine gun squad.

He is survived by his parents; and two sisters, Helen and Elinor, both at home. His grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Holmes, live at Lorimor.

DALE SCHOONOVER IS BURIED HERE

Body of Young Soldier Who Died in Belgium Is Brought Home

The body of Pfc. Dale Schoonover of Winterset, who died in the service of his country during the recent war, was brought home to a final resting place in the Winterset cemetery this week.

The body arrived here Tuesday from Europe, and funeral services with full military honors were conducted Wednesday afternoon from the Ramsey-Richards funeral home. The Rev. G. L. Hufstader, pastor of the Winterset Methodist church, conducted the rites, with representatives of Green-Rogers post of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars participating. A military escort from the U.S. army, T.Sgt. James O. Burge, accompanied the body to Winterset.

Pfc. Schoonover was killed in action while serving with the American army in Belgium on Dec. 17, 1944. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Schoonover of Winterset. He was 19 years old at the time of his death.
