Headline was: Earl Smith, Jr., died in Germany

Word has been received that a former Monroe township boy has been killed in action in Burma. He was Second Lieut. Robert L. DeLanoit, oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. P. DeLanoit at Badger, formerly of Monroe township. Lieutenant DeLanoit was killed in action over Burma on Jan. 18. He was a pilot on a transport plane, carrying supplies to front line fighters, and was dropping supplies to advance troops when his plane was caught in a down-draft, causing it to crash.

Lieutenant DeLanoit was born on his grandfather's farm, adjoining Monroe Center school. He started to school there, but the family moved to Calhoun county in 1929. He graduated from the Rinard Consolidated school, Ft. Dodge Junior college, and attended Iowa State college at Ames. He had been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, with one oak leaf cluster, and the Air medal, also with one oak leaf cluster.
