HAROLD A. SMALLEY DIES IN CALIFORNIA

Former Winterset Resident Succumbs at Age of 47 Years

Harold Austen Smalley, former Winterset resident, died at a hospital in Long Beach, Calif., last week. He was born in Marshalltown, Iowa, 47 years ago, but came to Winterset when he was a small boy. He was graduated from the Winterset high school with the class of 1917, and then went to Grinnell college. He later was graduated from the law college of Drake university.

In 1927, he moved to Los Angeles, California, with his mother, Mrs. Eva Smalley, and ten years later moved to Long Beach. He was employed as credit manager with Dr. J. M. Soss. He was a member of the Methodist church and belonged to the Elks lodge in Grinnell.

His funeral services were held last Friday at 11 a.m. from the chapel in Mottel's Mortuary in Long Beach, and burial was made in that city.

He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Eva Smalley of 528 Linden avenue, Long Beach, and three brothers, William H. Smalley, of Los Angeles, Lieut. Col. Anson J. Smalley of the U.S. army, and S.Sgt. John L. Smalley, also of the U.S. army. His father, the late William Smalley preceded him in death.
