Clinton L. Nellis, son of Robert L. and Julia Nolte Nellis, was born in Scott county, Iowa, October 26, 1879. When a young man he moved with his parents to a farm in Madison county, near Earlham, where he resided until he felt a call to the ministry. At this time he gave up farming to continue his education in preparation for his life's work. In his youth he consecrated his life to his Master.

While in college he began his ministerial services and has spent 32 continuous years in pastoral work in Nebraska, Kansas and Iowa Yearly Meetings.

He was ever a beloved pastor and especially appreciated by the young people with whom he worked, with an unusual degree of success. His services were not confined to his own flock. He was much respected by the entire communities in which he worked and was often called upon for special services.

He held many positions of responsibility in the Quarterly and Yearly Meetings while working within their limits.

Clinton Nellis was a quiet man, much of his most effective work being done through personal contacts in calling on families or by inviting them into his home.

In 1916 he was united in marriage with Lora Hadley, who has walked beside him for almost 30 years, sharing his work, his cares and his joys. To this union were born two children, Robert H. and Esther Almeda Deines, both of Wichita, Kansas.

While his greatest purpose was in forwarding God's kingdom on earth he loved his home and was a devoted husband and a tender, loving father.

Early in the morning of March 6, he was stricken with a heart attack while in attendance at Pastors Short Course at Oskaloosa, Iowa, and late Thursday evening he heard his Master's "Well done, thou good and faithful servant;....enter thou into the joy of thy Lord."

Besides his wife and two children and their companions Ruby Nellis and Harold Deines, he leaves to mourn his passing two grandsons, three brothers, Roy C. of Des Moines; Earl E. of Woodward, Iowa; and Merl E. of Earlham. One brother, Ward V. of Earlham, having preceeded him in death last November. Many other relatives and friends survive.
