Dora Gilman, daughter of Henry and Anna Laing Ketelsen, was born at Clinton, Iowa, on February 18, 1883 soon after their arrival in this country from Germany. She was the fourth in a family of six brothers and four sisters, all of whom have preceded her in death except Fred and Julius of Portland, Oregon and two sisters, Rose Black of Montivideo, Minn., and Elsie Nielsen of Clinton, Iowa.

She joined the Lutheran church at an early age. She received very little formal education being obliged to work for her living. She came to this part of Iowa when about 17 years of age to work for a family moving here from Clinton.

She was united in marriage to Henry Gilman on September 4, 1906 and to this union were born four sons and one daughter: Everett, Roy, Carl and Curtis. The daughter, Margaret died in an accident at the age of 9 years.

They lived most of their married life on a farm in Penn township in Madison county, Iowa. She joined the Penn Center Methodist church and later when they moved to Stuart transferred to the Stuart Methodist church. She could not be active in her church because of her frail health, but was always greatly interested. She enjoyed people, her friends, her flowers and garden. But her family was always her first concern.

Beside her two brothers and two sisters, she is survived by her four sons and husband Henry, ten grandchildren and one great grandchild. She had been in delicate health for some time but the end came suddenly in her home on May 16, 1959 at the age of 76 years, 2 months, 28 days.
