Mrs. Mary Jane Jordan

Mary Jane Reed was born in Henry county, Illinois, February 26, 1855. She departed this life May 26, 1930, at the age of 75 years and 3 months.

She was united in marriage to Francis M. Jordan, August 29, 1875, with whom she lived nearly 52 years. She survived her husband 3 years and 14 days. To this union were born ten children, six of whom survive her: Mrs. D. V. Crawford, of Earlham; S. D. Jordan, Grinnell; G. I. Jordan, Mason City; Mrs. Grace Jones, Des Moines; Mrs. J. W. French, Palestine, Texas; and Dr. F. B. Jordan, of Des Moines. All were present. She also leaves 12 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

She was of pioneer stock, being the oldest child of the first white girl born in Knox county, Illinois. Although the oldest of five children, she is survived by only one brother, G. T. Reed, of Aledo, Illinois.

Her early life was spent in Henry county, Illinois. After her marriage, she and her husband lived in Champaign county, Illinois, for nearly 19 years. In the spring of 1894, with husband and family, she moved from Illinois to Madison county, Iowa, where they lived until after the death of her husband. The family home was 1 mile south of Winterset for about 25 years. Since her husband’s death, she had lived with her children.

She united with the Primitive Baptist church at the age of 16 and continued in that faith the remainder of her life.

Her health had been failing for the past year. She was stricken with paralysis on May 20, 1930, and never regained consciousness.

She died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. D. V. Crawford, 12 miles northwest of Winterset.

Funeral services were held at the Primitive Baptist church, 1 mile north of Winterset, at 1:30 o’clock, May 28th, conducted by Elder G. J. Jones, of Knoxville, assisted by Elders J. N. Woods of St. Charles and W. A. Holmes, of Newton.
