DEATH OF SARAH JANE SMITH

Sarah Jane Smith, who was 95 years of age, died Wednesday, June 5th, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Robert Brown, of Winterset. For the past five years she has been in poor health, seldom able to leave the home, and much of that time unable to be even around the house.

The deceased was born in Washington county, Pennsylvania, December 25, 1833. At the age of 18, she came with her folks to Pella, where she met Jeptha D. Smith, to whom she was married April 5, 1855. Ten children were born to this union, seven daughters and three sons, six of whom survive the mother.

After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Smith spent six years in Pella, then moved to Indiana, where the period of the Civil war was spent. At the close of the war, they came to Madison county and located on a farm. Until the death of her husband in 1912, Mrs. Smith lived either on the farm in Madison or Adair county, or at Stuart. Mrs. Smith is survived by six children, four daughters and two sons: Mrs. Emma Swisher and Mrs. Della Smith, of California; Mrs. Mary Denning, of Stuart; Harvey Smith, of Minnesota; Mrs. Robert Brown and Frank Smith, of Winterset. There are twenty-one grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren.

The Rev. A. P. Keast conducted the funeral services at Tidrick's funeral home, Friday, June 7th, at 1:30 o'clock and burial was made in the Stuart cemetery.

Obituary – Sarah Jane Smith

Sarah Jane Clutter was born in Washington county, Pennsylvania, December 25, 1833. At the age of 18 she came with her folks to Pella, Iowa, where she met Jephtha D. Smith, to whom she was married on the 5th of April 1855. This union was blessed with ten children, seven daughters and three sons, six of whom survive their mother. Three daughters and one son have preceded her in death.

After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Smith spent six years in Pella, then moved to Indiana, where the period of the Civil war was spent. At the close of the war they returned to Iowa, locating on a farm in Madison county. Until the death of her husband in 1912, Mrs. Smith lived either on the farm in Madison or Adair county, or Stuart, where he passed away, and where he is buried.

Fourteen years ago, she came to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. Robert Brown, in Winterset, and where she passed away on June 5, 1929, having reached the age of 95 years, 5 months, 11 days.

For the past five years or more, she she has been in very poor health, seldom able to leave the home, and much of that time unable to be even around the house.

Mrs. Smith is survived by six children, four daughters and two sons; Mrs. Emma Swisher and Mrs. Della Smith of California; Mrs. Mary Denning of Stuart; Harvey Smith of Minnesota; Mrs. Robert Brown of Winterset; and Frank Smith of Winterset. There are twenty-one grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren.
