Long-Time Resident Here Died Last Week in Alabama
William C. Sumner, member of a pioneer Madison county family and a resident of Winterset for most of his long life, died on Monday of last week at Citronelle, Ala., where he had been making his home for the past four years. He was 85 years old.
Mr. Sumner was the son of W. S. Sumner, an early settler in Union township. He was born in New York, but came to Madison county at an early age with his parents.
Most of Mr. Sumner's life was spent in Winterset. He was a skilled carpenter and mechanic, and was one of the first automobile mechanics in the business. In late years he had operated a picture framing and repair shop for household machinery. He closed that following the death of his wife several years ago, and moved to Alabama.
Mr. Sumner was an active and one of the oldest members of the Knights of Pythias lodge.
Near surviving relatives are his brother, Raymond, and a sister, Doris Sumner, who live just west of Winterset.
Funeral services were held last Saturday from the Ramsey-Richards funeral home in Winterset, in charge of the Rev. Tom Foglesong, pastor of the Church of Christ. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
