Mrs. Albertina Marquardt Burger
Albertina Marquardt, the youngest daughter of Carl and Dorothea (Schoetzke) Marquardt, was born in Neuenkirchen, Pomerania, Germany, on January 25, 1855, and died at the home of her sons, Roy and Albert Burger in Jefferson township, Madison county, Iowa, on September 23, 1934, at the age of 79 years, 7 months and 28 days.
She came with her parents to Clayton county, Iowa, in 1859, where they lived until the year 1873, when they came to Madison county, settling on a farm in the northern part of Jefferson township.
In the late 60’s and early 70’s, Jefferson township received a large number of settlers from Clayton county, Iowa. Among these were about a dozen families of Germans who had settled in Clayton county in the 50’s and when land increased in value after the Civil war, they came to Madison county and settled in the northern part of Jefferson township. Of these only two are left in this community, Herman Marquardt and Mrs. Charles Wishmier.
Mrs. Burger’s education was received in the public schools of Clayton county and here she was confirmed in the faith of the Lutheran church. After the organization of that church in Jefferson township, her membership was transferred here.
On March 14, 1883, she was united in marriage to William H. Burger of Jefferson township. He was a member of an earlier German settlement in the south part of Jefferson township. They lived on the farm until about nine years ago, when they moved to Van Meter, on account of the failing health of Mr. Burger, who died July 14, 1931. Since that time she has made her home with her sons, Roy and Albert, on the home farm, and with her daughter, Mrs. Trindle, in Van Meter. Occasionally she would spend a month or so with her other sons and other relatives.
She leaves to mourn her passing six children, five sons and one daughter: Arthur H. Burger of Cedar Falls, Charles M. Burger of the U. S. Veterans hospital at Knoxville, Clarence H. Burger of Waukee, Roy H. and Albert M. Burger on the home farm in Jefferson township, and Mrs. Beatrice Trindle of Van Meter; thirteen grandchildren, one brother, Herman Marquardt of Jefferson township, many nieces and nephews and other relatives and a host of friends.
For some months her health had been declining, yet there seemed nothing to alarm the relatives until last Saturday, when she complained of a pain about her heart. She grew better and retired for the evening. Early Sunday morning she was found sleeping her last sleep, seeming to have passed away in the early morning hours without any struggle or pain.
Thus another pioneer of Jefferson township has gone on, leaving only two of those early German, Clayton county settlers surviving. Funeral services were held at the Lutheran church, Tuesday, September 25th, at 2 o’clock, conducted by the Rev. C. Lille, pastor. Interment was made in the Jefferson cemetery, by the side of her husband.
