MRS. OLIVER JAMES OF WINTERSET DIES

Past President of Garden Clubs of Iowa Was 78 Years Old

Mrs. Oliver James of Winterset, a life-long resident of Madison county, died at Memorial hospital here Friday, Oct. 14, after an extended illness. She was 78 years of age.

Mrs. James was the former Della Howell, daughter of Nelson and Sarah Howell. She was born in this county May 16, 1877. As a young woman she was married to James J. Crossley. They were parents of one son, Howell Crossley, whose death occurred at the age of 10 years.

She was later married to Oliver James, and they made their home in Winterset for several years. He preceded her in death.

Nearest surviving relatives include three brothers, B. F. Howell of Breakenridge, Colo., A. W. Howell of Volga, S. Dak., and Squire S. Howell of Ontario, Calif.

Mrs. James was a member of the Winterset Methodist church. She was active in garden club work, and at one time served as state president of the Iowa Garden clubs.

Funeral services were held Monday from the Winterset Methodist church, conducted by a former pastor, the Rev. Glenn Parrott, now of Council Bluffs. Burial was made at Norwalk.
