Thursday, May 10, 1934MISS JULIA RISER CALLED BY DEATH
Earlham Woman, 58, Passed Away Sunday Following Week’s Illness.
Miss Julia Riser passed away Sunday at the home of her sister Mrs. Evangeline Gilbert, where she had been seriously ill for only a week, though in failing health for some time previous. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. W. H. Beers of Prescott, a former pastor here, assisted by Rev. James Walls. Interment was in the Earlham Cemetery.
Those from a distance attending the last rites for Miss Riser were: Mr. and Mrs. Walter Follett and Mr. and Mrs. Will Nelson of Clermont, Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Curtis of Ogden, Miss Alice Wilson of Boone, Miss Irma Imboden of Ames and Miss Iris Imboden of Macksburg.
Julia, fifth child of John and Maria Riser was born at Clermont, Fayette County, Iowa, on November 10, 1875.
In 1902 the family moved to Earlham, Madison County, Iowa and Julia, the devoted daughter took her place as helper and companion to her parents.
Every now and then in life’s journey one meets an individual who though physically frail, plans and labors and lives for others, an individual who’s diligence and thoughtfulness so far excel her strength that we marvel at her accomplishments.
Such was Julia Riser. Denied the joy of a home of her own she ministered to those about her in the homes of others, and as if to fill the vacancy left by the lack of a family of her own, she gathered to her understanding heart all who longed to be mothered. During the declining years of her parents she gave them devoted and tender care, nor did she ever fail them till all their earthly wants had been supplied, even though her own health failed.
Miss Riser was a member of the Methodist Church and Ladies Aid and of the Eastern Star and in these she was active as long as her health permitted.
After the death of her father and mother, Miss Riser spent most of her time between the homes of her sisters, Mrs. Carrie Follett of Clermont, and Mrs. Evangeline Gilbert of Earlham, and at the latter place she was stricken on April 30th. Aware that her remaining days were few she prayerfully submitted, and in indistinct expression spoke of her going and of those who had already gone and from the presence of her loved ones on earth, she passed to her reward on May 6, 1934, aged 58 ½ years. Quiet and unassuming, yet faithful, the words of the Blessed Saviour seem fitting, “She hath done what she could.”
Julia will be missed by many friends and by the remaining brothers and sisters, Albert and John Riser, Mrs. Fred Imboden, Mrs. Louie Wilkie and Mrs. Frank Gilbert, of Earlham, and Mrs. Carrie Follett, of Clermont, Iowa. They with nineteen nieces and nephews to whom Julia was devotedly attached mourn her passing.
