Julia Nolte Nellis

Julia Ann Nolte, fourth of the family of thirteen children of Herman Henry and Sarah M. Paggett Nolte was born in Jefferson County, Indiana, August 27, 1852.

In early childhood she moved with her parents to Iowa, locating near Muscatine. It was here that she was united in marriage with Robert L. Nellis on January 1, 1879. Five sons were born to this union.

In 1897 they moved to Madison County on a farm in the Penn Center neighborhood. It was here that she continued to reside with the exception of three years spent at Ames, Iowa and a few later years at Earlham, Iowa.

At the age of twelve years she joined the North Star Baptist church near Muscatine, Iowa later uniting with the Friends church of Earlham, Iowa.

During her whole life she suffered much from ill health, and for the last few years was confined to her home with her husband who is an invalid.

Her boys were her constant care and joy. She gave them a mother’s full measure of devotion. Often in their childhood she would gather them around her knee, telling them the Sweet Story of Old, and teaching them the way of life.

During the last few months she expressed a desire to be at rest, and a few days before her passing told those around her that her lamp was trimmed and burning.

In the early hours of January 20, 1934 she quietly passed away at the age of 81 years, 4 months and 23 days, leaving to mourn their loss, the companion with whom she spent fifty-five years, her five sons and their families.
