The Winterset Madisonian
Winterset, Iowa
Thursday, January 18, 1934Maude Drake Hays, daughter of John and Marthy Drake, was born in Madison Co., Iowa, in 1878, and passed to higher life, January 9, 1934 at the age of 55 years, 3 months, and 29 days. At the age of 24 she was married to Erl Hays, and to this union, one son and one daughter were born.
Her whole maternal life was lived as a firm believer and follower of the golden rule, “That whatsoever ye would, others should do unto you, that do ye also unto them! None of God’s children could have lived with a more firm belief in the continuity of life, than she. Her understanding of the future life, and Godly deeds to express that understanding, brought forth from truth and facts, proved by investigation, brought the highest esteem from all those who came in personal contact with her life.
Her great desire to do good and help others, was far greater than her physical ability could accomplish. She was aware of her serious physical condition and talked many times recently about passing to higher life and repeatedly asked her husband to write out the address to be used at her burial service.
Those she leaves with saddened hearts at the sudden transition are, her husband Erl Hays, her son Frederick Hays, her daughter Mrs. Bernice Winn, and four grandchildren and her brother S. M. Drake. Nothing more beautiful can be added then the words of Francis Willard: “Death is only a bend in the river of life, where the current starts heavenward.”
