Earlham Special, July 26th – Warren Dean passed away early Wednesday morning, at the Chas. Hadley home, after a ten days’ illness. Mr. Dean had been in ill health for the past few years, but only recently suffered a stroke, which caused his death. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at the Methodist church. Mrs. P. L. Stanley, a sister of Mr. Dean, has been with him and cared for him during his illness. His wife passed away several years ago.

Former Earlham merchant Who Passed Away Tuesday Was Laid to Rest Saturday After Services at Methodist Church
OBITUARY
Warren J. Dean was born in Muskingum County, Ohio, August 15, 1852. He was the second son of Dr. Roland T. Dean and Sarah Coulson Dean. With his parents he came to Iowa in 1862 settling at New Sharon. In 1880 he was married to Jennie Walsh at Newton, Iowa, whose companionship he enjoyed until death parted them five years ago. W. J. Dean’s life work was teaching. Most of the 44 years he spent in this work was in the capacity of superintendent.
In 1911 he came to Earlham where he engaged in the mercantile business. In early life he became a member of the Methodist Church and has ever been a consistent member. He became a member of the Earlham Methodist church, by letter, December 31, 1911 under the pastorate of Rev. John Luther Johnson. During his long illness he often expressed the wish to be of more service to the church and that he felt nothing in his heart for anyone but kindness and love. On July 18, at 12:30 a. m. he passed peacefully on.
He leaves to mourn his loss, one sister Mrs. P. L. Stanley, of Des Moines, 3 nephews and 3 nieces, Edgar W. and Warren C. Dean of Columbus, Ohio, R. D. Stanley of Des Moines, Mrs. Maude A. Rark of Mitchellville, Mrs. R. L. Scott of Hedrick and Mrs. W. A. Weyrauch of Des Moines.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at 1:30 in the Earlham Methodist church by the pastor, Rev. James Walls, who was assisted by Willis Craven of the Friends church.
The music was presented by Mervyn McLennan, and Mrs. Arthur Marks with Mrs. McLennan at the piano.
Interment was in the Earlham cemetery.

The funeral services of Warren Dean were held Saturday afternoon at one thirty o’clock at the Methodist church with Rev. James Walls, preaching the sermon. Rev. Willis Craven assisted with the services. Mrs. Arthur Marks and Mervyn McLennan sang “Looking this Way” and “The Home of the Soul.”
Mr. Dean was born in Ohio and later moved with his family to Iowa. He was a teacher in the public schools for forty-four years, several of which were spent in Winterset.
He and his wife came to Earlham in 1911 where he conducted a store. His wife preceded him in death a few years ago.
He leaves a sister Mrs. P. L. Stanley of Des Moines and three nephews and three nieces. Among the relatives present from away were nephew Dean Stanley of Des Moines and two nieces, Mrs. Maude Roark of Mitchellville and Mrs. Weyrauch of Des Moines. Burial was made in the Earlham cemetery with Ross Reynolds, Harry Fastle, Harry Hunter, Bert Compton, Floyd McKibben and Charles Lush acting as pallbearers.
