J. E. LILLEY DIES

J. E. Lilley, former Madison county resident, died Monday at the Broadlawns General hospital in Des Moines, of injuries suffered when he was struck by a car last Thursday. He was struck by a car as he attempted to cross the street at Ninth street and University, and suffered fractures of both legs and head and back injuries. Mr. Lilley, a carpenter, had been a resident of Des Moines 37 years. He is survived by his wife and an adopted son and daughter, and a brother, George Lilley of Houston, Texas.

Mr. and Mrs. J. Earl Emerson and Mr. and Mrs. Grover Mease drove to Des Moines Wednesday to attend the funeral services which were held at the Hamilton funeral home at 1:30 p.m. Burial was made in Indianola. Mr. Lilley was an uncle of Mr. Emerson and Mrs. Mease.

STRUCK BY CAR, DIES OF INJURIES

J. E. Lilley’s Rites Set Wednesday.

J. E. Lilley, 73, of 1230 Ninth st., died Monday at Broadlawns General hospital of injuries suffered when he was struck by a car last Thursday. His death was the tenth Des Moines traffic fatality this year.

Lilley was hit by a car driven by Eugene Elston, 22, of 676 Twenty-fourth st., as he attempted to cross the street at Ninth st. and University ave. He was thrown against a parked car.

Dr. A. E. Shaw, coroner, performed an autopsy and said Mr. Lilley died of a fractured skull. Both legs also were broken.

The coroner said he would recommend to the traffic department the case be sent directly to the Polk county grand jury for investigation.

Services will be at Hamilton’s Funeral home at 1:30 p. m. Wednesday and burial will be at Indianola, Ia. Mr. Lilley, a carpenter, had been a resident of Des Moines 37 years. He moved here from Indianola.

He is survived by his wife; an adopted son and daughter, Ellis LeRoy Lilley and Mrs. Nina Littlejohn, and a brother George Lilley, Houston, Tex.
