Obituary

Elihu B. Stanley died at the home of his daughter, Oliver Hockett, in Des Moines, Nov. 5, 1907, aged 81 years, 2 months and 11 days.

E. B. Stanley was born in Salem, Ohio, August 24, 1826. He lived with his father until he became of age, at which time he was married to Mary E. Ladd in the month of August 1848. To this union were born eight children, four boys and four girls. One died in infancy and two since that time, Julia C. Spencer in 1894, and C. J. Stanley in 1902; the rest of the children were in attendance at the funeral.

He and his loving companion having lived in Ohio on a farm until after the war, they moved to this state and settled in Mahaska county where he engaged in farming. They remained at this place for 25 years and then came to Earlham where they lived most of the time since. Elihu has been a life long member of the society of Conservative Friends, and to which society he has been a consistent and ever trusting member.

A wife, sister, five children, twenty-one grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren are left to mourn the loss of this good man, who has ever been a loving husband and father.

The remains were brought from Des Moines Tuesday night and the funeral service was held at the home of his son, Albert at one o'clock Wednesday afternoon.

The remains were laid to rest in Earlham cemetery, six of his grandchildren bearing him to his last resting place. Thus we have laid to rest this good man, the head of a large family.
