Early Pioneer of Crawford Township Dies at Long Beach, Calif.
Lanson Howell, one of the early pioneers of Crawford township and one of the county's most successful farmers, passed away last Sunday at Long Beach, Calif., where he and Mrs. Howell had spent the last two winters on account of his failing health. He had been a sufferer from Bright's disease for some time and in anticipation of the end, arranged all his business affairs, before leaving for the west last fall.
He came to Crawford township from Coshocton county, Ohio, with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Howell in 1849 when two years old. he was married in 1868 to Miss Elizabeth L. Hughart. Two children born, Chas. E. Howell, who now resides in Douglas township and Ollie May who died in infancy. Following the death of his wife, Mr. Howell moved back to the old homestead in Crawford township, where he continued to reside until his death. In 1877 he was married to Miss Mary E. Williams, who with five sons, survive the father.
Mr. Howell was one of the most successful farmers and stock raisers in the county. He worked diligently acquired a large fortune and owned something like 2000 acres of land near Patterson at the time of his death.
He took an active interest in the welfare of the Patterson M. E. church of which he was a member.
Beneath an unpolished exterior, he had a heart that throbbed with human kindness and responded generously to every worthy appeal. He will be missed in the community where he lived and labored for so many years.
The body will be brought to Patterson for burial but the time of funeral cannot be determined at this time.

Lanson, son of Aaron and Margaret Howell, was born Sept. 23, 1847 in Coshocton county, Ohio. He came with his parents to Crawford township, Madison county, Iowa when two years old. He married Miss Elizabeth L. Hughart in 1868. To this union were born Charles E., who now resides in Douglas township, and Ollie May, who died in infancy. Following the death of his wife, he moved back to the old homestead in Crawford township, where he continued to reside until his death.
He was married to Miss Mary E. Williams on Sept. 6, 1887. To this union eight children were born; Wesley E. of Martensdale; Vernon, who died June 7, 1909; Darwin C., now with the A.E.F. in France; Irwin and Russell, at home; Ruth, who passed away Feb. 6, 1898; Curtis, with his mother, in Long Beach, Calif.; and an infant son, who died May 28, 1900.
The death of Mr. Howell was anticipated, but came unexpectedly at the noon hour of Dec. 29, 1918, while at Long Beach, Calif., where he had gone with his wife and son to spend the winter.
For many years the deceased was a leading member and supporter of the Patterson M. E. church. Mrs. Howell, Charles, Wesley, Darwin, Irwin, Russell, Curtis and other relatives with friends mourn his death.
